in which that’s how i choose to remember it.

A Ginger of the Month on the first of the month, two months in a row? I’m really growing up! (Also, how is it November already?)

So, this one is obvious. Any girl my age, my style, my temperament, is obsessed with “indie rock darling”, Jenny Lewis. As I wrote somewhere in here, I arrived on the indie scene pretty late. I was a pop tart that segued into the emo scene seamlessly before taking a slight detour into hardcore (HXC!!!!!!) and then, finally, ending up in the arms of Rilo Kiley. I heard of the band through LiveJournal (don’t judge!) and it was love at first listen. While, of course, the music and her singing have improved tremendously over the years, I still think their early stuff is pretty amazing.

But what really put me over-the-top on the Jenny love was how well she transitioned into her solo stuff. I remember listening to her first album, Rabbit Fur Coat, on, literal, repeat. It streamed somewhere for a bit at first, and then I found it to download for free before its release date (oopsie poopsie!), and then I went and bought the physical album when it was finally in stores. I’m very surprised the thing is still in good shape. I think I learned the lyrics to every song upon my first night of listening. And, while Acid Tongue isn’t fully my cup of tea (I want to punch “Pretty Bird” right in its mouth I hate it so much), the numbers I do like, I like five billion times over (someone can has make a band to cover “Jack Killed Mom” with me, please?).

On top of her talent as a singer (that gets better with every album), musician (who cares if her guitar-ing isn’t very difficult! I can barely stand and sing at the same time), and lyricist (seriously, what girl do you know that’s never quoted “and I’m in love with illusions, so saw me in half / I’m in love with the trick, so pull another rabbit out of your hat”?), she has pretty amazing style. She reintroduced the ’60s style babydoll dress to the masses, made cowboy boots fashionable across the country (and oceans), and made unwashed hair hot again (I’ve been trying to do that for years). I’m a little disappointed with her recent-ish extreme weight loss and the outfits (or outfit – that fugly as frick overalls getup?!) she chooses to wear that highlight just how bone thin she’s become, but I’m sure she can turn it around; return to the Jenny of yore with the thick (as a skinny girl can get) thighs and tiny skirts.

I haven’t seen Jenny in any of the movies listed on her IMDB page (yes, that includes Troop Beverly Hills; I’ll hand in my girl card upon publishing this post, and after I just got it back from not having read Jane Eyre yet), but it might be nice to have myself a little marathon! You’re all invited, duh.

This is, if I remember correctly, the very first Rilo Kiley song I remember hearing. So simple, so cute.

Wait, also?

Banging taste in dudes.

  1. I love this post! Back in the day I dated a boy who looks like Blake. Especially when they both had the creepy mustache.

My first introduction to Rilo Kiley was from my first REAL college boyfriend who went to art school in Savannah and was “sooo indie.” We used to video chat and he’d play “With Arms Outstretched” for me on his guitar. How romantical! lol

When you come to California we’ll have to have to watch Troop Beverly Hills. It’s so good!

  2. OH. MY. GOD. You’ve never seen Troop Beverly Hills?!?! “Come on everybody it’s cookie time”?!?! I’m totally buying it and we’re watching it on vaca.

  3. you HAVE to watch ‘The Wizard’ — she’s great in it, and there’s a still-cute Fred Savage!
